We know, we know…you want picture perfect nails for prom, but you’re not too thrilled about spending big bucks for a mani/pedi. Don’t fret, fashionista! Use these tips so your tips and toes will have that salon look for the big night and beyond.
Step 1. Soften your cuticles
Get a bowl full of soapy, warm water and let your nails soak for about two minutes.
Step 2. Apply a base coat
A base coat helps to make your nails healthier, makes the nail polish last longer on your nails, and – if you’re using a dark polish – keeps the polish from staining your nails!
<Sally Hansen> Double Duty Base & Top Coat $5
Step 3. Don’t skimp on the colored polish
Two coats will give you the rich color and full coverage
you’re looking for.

<Nicole by OPI> I Love You Cherry Much $7 at Target
<China Glaze> Ruby Pumps $7 at Sally Beauty Supply
<Sally Hansen> Stunning Scarlet $6
Step 4. Apply a top coat
Once the color coats have dried, apply a topcoat. A topcoat will give your nails a glossier look and helps prevent pesky polish chips.
<Essie> No Chips Ahead Top Coat $8
Step 5. Clean up around the edges
Have a stray bit of nail polish on the skin around your nails? Get rid of it with a cotton swab dipped in nail polish remover!
Step 6. Moisturize
Be patient while polish dries completely, then apply lotion. This will moisturize both skin and nails.
Voila! Now your nails look ah-mazing, sans the hefty price.
