Cover girl Carly Rose Sonenclar looks oh-so-fresh and springy in our April/May issue and now you can get the look yourself! Makeup maven Jenn Mellon describes her favorite products and how she used them to give Carly the flawless yet effortless look that we can't get enough of.
The key to any good makeup look is a flawless foundation. I love the light coverage that doesn't read "too much makeup" that you get from Bobbi Brown's Tinted Moisturizer. It's super important to make sure the color matches your face exactly, so always test it out on your cheek to make sure the color isn't too dark or too light. Sometimes I blend a lighter and darker to make a perfect shade. For Carly, I used the Extra Light tint.
It's a good idea to use something a bit heavier for dark under-eye circles and blemishes. On Carly, I used the Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit, which has the conceler on top and the finishing powder underneath.
To get a fresh springy look on her cheeks, I chose Bobbi Brown Powder Blush in Pale Pink and blended it onto the apples of the cheeks.
One of the most crucial elements of a bright, springy face—and one of my favorite makeup tools ever—is a highlighter. It instantly gives your face that bright and awake look. You blend it above cheekbones, onto the temples and slightly onto the sides of the forehead. You can also apply it down the center of the nose and above lips. My fave is Benefit’s High Beam Highlighter.
For Carly's eyes, I chose the soft, neutral brown palette of Neutrogena's Nourishing Eye Quad in Butter Creme. It has four complimentary shades for all-over color, crease shadow and highlighting the brow bone and inside corners of the eye.
A staple makeup trick to pop the eyes is to line the upper lash line with black liner—it's an instant eye opener and adds a punch to anyone's makeup. Make sure to keep the liner right on the lash line (versus a thick black line above the lashes) for a natural look.
I finished up Carly's look by curling her lashes with my all-time favorite Shu Uemura eyelash curler and applying a coat of NYC Color Showtime mascara in black.
For a pop of bold color on her lips, I used COVERGIRL Lip Perfection Lipstick in Siren (415).
